You bring up a good point. Being social online shares many similarities with being social in real life -- you need to be sensitive and know when to turn it both on, and off.

I think social media may be becoming overrated when it comes to business strategy because it has become overrated in the public's life it seems. Many people who are excited about Google+ are happy to have a way to start fresh on social media. Use it to once again to be an actual social connection to people they want to communicate with, rather than a large platform of promotions and advertisements.

Overrated? In some ways. Underrated? Hardly. Overused? Definitely. As more businesses adopt a social persona, trying to build a relationship with me, I find myself tuning out and turning off to their attentions. It takes imagination and appropriate use of the medium to be effective. Too many businesses jump in blindly without understanding how, when and why to connect with their audience -- and when to leave them alone. Often they hurt their cause (and their sales) more than help.

Chris,

Agreed, games and Facebook ads are not a factor in search rankings (at least not yet, so far as we know :).

Perhaps I should have been clearer in my response. What I was getting at is, the bottom line for this particular company is to get more people to play their online poker games. They may have decided they'll get more bang for their buck by other means besides gaming the Google search engine. Facebook is now the most visited website, even above Google, and social games are extremely popular on that site.

Also, in my own experience, I have found that search terms used on Google can trickle over to Facebook. Some time ago, I was looking to purchase a digital camera and I did some research into various options using Google. Shortly thereafter, my Facebook page started showing ads for digital cameras, even though I never mentioned anything about cameras on the Facebook platform. This is just one example, it has happened for other items that I've searched for on Google.

That said, your point that the original campaign may have failed, or the company found a different way to gin up Google results, is well taken.

Chris
Wow, $120 a month paid 6 months in advance. Times must have been flush for online poker. Based on your subsequent experience, where the price dropped. perhaps the gambit did not pay off as well as planned. Or, maybe they just moved on to other things, such as placement in social games and Facebook ads. In any event, you are right about there being many reasons you might want to game the search system. Of course, I do not advice doing so because it's unethical and risky business.

Dwayne,
You bring up an good point about the affects of technology. We seem to be living in an ever more fractured world when it comes to communications. The various options that vie for our attention are rapidly expanding, for sure. Of course, you hit it right on with your note about how the best way to capture and hold a customer's attention is to know what is of interest to them in the first place.
