What The F**K Is Social Media: One Year Later Is A Viral Sensation

Before you raise an eyebrow over this post’s headline, please be aware What the F**K is Social Media: One Year Later is the true-life title of a presentation by Marta Kagan that’s currently coursing through the web in viral fashion.

Posted on slideshare two weeks ago, as of today it has more than 48,000 views. And hello, this is a slideshow that’s primarily facts and figures about social media. In the scheme of things that’s a tepid topic for general audiences to get excited about.

Messages recommending What the  F**K have been tweeted and re-tweeted a lot. It’s the topic of numerous LinkedIn group discussions. Facebookers are sharing and favoriting it. The media has caught the bug too (the biggest pusher here is Mashable). Comment boxes to these various posts are busy, as many viewers are compelled to respond after they’ve given the presentation a once over.

The provocative title doesn’t hurt, though this is actually a sequel to a slideshow by Kagan from last year titled (surprise), What the F**K is Social Media.

Like the first edition, the one-year later iteration offers many interesting factoids as well as catchy quotes from a variety of sources.

The juicy nuggets include:

  • 3 out or 4 Americans use social technology (Forrester, The Growth of Social Technology Adoption, 2008)
  • Time spent on social networks is growing at 3 times the overall internet rate, accounting for approximately 10% of all internet time (Nielsen, Global Faces & Networked Places, 2009)
  • 100,000,000 YouTube videos are viewed daily
  • The monthly growth rate of Twitter users from just January to February 2009 was 1382%
  • 93% of social media users believe a company should have a presence in social media (Cone, Business in Social Media Study, 2008)

Kagan goes on to note that social media is more than simply another marketing channel; it’s part of public relations, customer service, loyalty-building and more. Then she lays out a simple set of steps that should be taken to craft a social media strategy.

While the factual content is powerful and eye-opening, the reason this presentation has gone viral is due to jocular remarks combined with the creative implementation of images that Kagan employs to illustrate her points. The images are clearly stock photos—however the way they are used is inspired, sensational, droll, often surprising and wholly memorable. Which by the way, could describe other presentations by Kagan, also viewable via slideshare.

Because I urge you to view What The F**k is Social Media: One Year Later, I will not spoil the pleasure by giving anything away (though I will say that slide number 45 is one of the wilder hoots in a big pack of ‘em).

Thnx, D!

I have often asked myself that question.

Now that you’ve seen the slideshow, maybe you have a better idea about that now :)
